PBI polymer may be solutioned for producing films, membranes, coatings, castings and impregnations. PBI can be dissolved in polar aprotic solvents such as DMAc, NMP, DMSO, Pyridine and NMF in which solutions can be formed.
For ready-made solution, PBI Performance Products offers a 26.2% solution PBI in Dimethylacetamide (DMAc) suitable for film casting, coating or impregnation. Lithium chloride is added to increase the long-term storage stability. While not detrimental in many cases, the LiCl can be removed in an aqueous wash. Viscosity can be lowered by raising temperature or adding DMAc. Viscosity could, for example, be lowered to 100 Poise by raising the temperature to 100C or by thinning to 19% solids.
